Pirin Mountains
|
The Pirin region occupies the South -Western most part of Bulgaria and is named after the magnifiicent Pirin Mountains. This is an appropriate name for this wild, rugged mountain, which is one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains, with its numerous lakes (some 160), hidden in deep cirques. The typical alpine landforms such as trog valleys, cirques, ridges and moraines are found mainly in North Pirin, the most frequently visited region.
The Rila monastery lies in the very Rila mountain, at 1,147 meters above sea level. It is situated 117km away from Sofia to the south, and is no doubt the most popular tourist site among all monasteries in Bulgaria equally for its size, natural surroundings, architecture, wall paintings and ancient history.

The town of Bansko is situated nearby the river Glazane (left feeder of Mesta River) in the north- eastern foot of Pirin, right bellow the highest and most beautiful part of the mountain.
Its name comes from the old Bulgarian word “ban” , which means “master”. It is just 160 kilometers away from Sofia and 6 kilometers from Razlog.
